VACANT_AVL is the first installment of an urban think tank forming in Asheville called Asheville Urban Futures. The think tank lead by Doug Hecker, Associate Professor of Architecture at Clemson University will bring together researchers, designers and community leaders to examine important issues facing Asheville’s rapid growth.

In the first installment VACANT_AVL the team targeted the theme “vacancy” in the Central Business District (CBD) of Asheville, by first compiling a comprehensive inventory of every vacant site in the CBD with the goal of promoting a more expanded set of development concepts for vacant sites within the District. Professor Hecker will present the teams’ findings with a focus on a series of projects that provide alternative strategies to conventional development models.
