May Section Meeting
Presented By: AIA
Trinity Episcopal Church 60 Church Street, Asheville NC
The Village of Best, Plus Update of Happenings along the River Arts District Presented by Robert Griffin, AIA 1 HSW/SD With the Biltmore House nearly complete, the Vanderbilts undertook the design and construction of a new town and railroad depot at the gateway to the estate on the site of the Village of Best. A large part of the architecture of Biltmore Village has survived for more than 100 years. The renovation, rehabilitation and adaptation of the buildings of Biltmore Village have created a thriving shopping district that still stands as the gateway to the Biltmore Estate. Nearly 100 years later redevelopment along the Riverfront continues. From Biltmore Village's beginnings to the River Arts District and beyond, this new frontier for the City of Asheville continues to be a viable sought-after area for vibrant development. Come hear of the beginnings, where we are now, what the future may hold, and opportunities to be a part of this continuing initiative. Robert Griffin, a member of AIA Asheville, serves on several commissions and boards in the Asheville community, including Board Member for RiverLink, Board Member for The Preservation Society, and Commissioner for the Asheville Area Riverfront Redevelopment Commission, where he is Chair for the Planning Subcommittee.
